...breaking.........? the lock with a chain snapper, and then riding off w/ the bike holding a chain snapper?
i previously heard that doing up to 4 months is possible
 
Beating them unconscious with the lock suspended by the chain ought to be punishment enough. For added effect, drag them to the nearest dumpster and throw them in.
