How often does my Android phone syncs my google account?

I just got a new phone, and it's my first android device. I registered it with my google account, and allowed it to sync my gmail, contacts, and calendar. But how often does it performs sync. It did not ask me how often I want it to sync. And everytime someone sends me an email, it's within seconds on my phone, as if it was syncing my gmail account constantly.

So does any one know how this google sync function works, because I don't want to be surprised when at the end of the month I will get a huge data bill.
 
Mail is actually "pushed" to your phone.

Sync of contacts and such are done every X minutes. You can change that under settings / accounts.
