How to burn .avi to cd so I can watch this certain film w/ my friend?

Rumors said when you burn the media file on .avi format on cd, players is not possible to read it, have no idea what format(eg. mpeg, etc.) can be used to make this certain .avi film into something so I can watch it on dvd players, etc., any idea?
