How to convert movies to file playable by PSP?

My little brother has video files he wants to put on his PSP. I've tried two different programs to convert video files into MP4, but when installed on the PSP, one came up as "unsupported" and the other came up as "corrupted." Both videos played on my laptop fine, but wouldn't play on the PSP. Is there a free program with no time restrictions that will create a file that actually works?
