How to fix a DVD that freezes and sticks?

So I have recently purchased a DVD box set online and recorded it in the mail today. Once I opened it and put it into my laptop, at some points the DVD will freeze and skip. So after an hour of being feud up and thinking it was the laptop, I put it into my Xbox 360. It does the same thing and a message pops up saying "attempting to find media." Is there a way to fix this or should I just return it?
