How to get lung fitness for a high altitude hike.?

Hi, I am going to USA in August this year. I live in Australia. I want to hike up Mt Shasta. The altitude is over 14,000 feet up there...back home highest I can get to is about 300 feet!
Wanting to know how can I increase my lung fitness to do the hike. I am reasonably fit at the moment. I went to 6,000 feet in Canada last year and I although I made it, I was really struggling for breath.
I really don't like swimming much, but any other ideas for me to do over the next 6 months?
