How to get rid of adult acne?

I am a 34 yr old female, and my face keeps breaking out. Not a bunch of little pimples, but i'll get a couple of big ones on my cheeks that last a long time and are painful. Is there something that I can use other than clearasil, oxy or other shelf brand names? Retin-A? Or some other strong spot treatment? HELP!
