How to make a DVD that actually works on a DVD player?

I have a movie that I downloaded (legally) and it's in avi format. I have WinAVI and DVDneXtCopy 4. I tried a couple different methods but they don't work on my HD DVD player (which can play regular DVDs).

How do I make it playable?
You can suggest other programs and an intro on how to use them for this purpose would be nice.
 
Some recording software requires you to perform an additional finalizing step if the disk is to be used with standard players.
