How to update iPod Touch 3rd gen to IOS 4.1?

So I pressed update and it said that this, (IOS 4.1) was available so I downloaded it which took half-an-hour then when it had done it said backing up my iPod. After about 20/30 minutes hardly any progress was being made in this so I pressed cancel. Obviously my iPod was not updated.

Now when I go to press update again it brings up my document and files to select from? Help! I really want to update! How do I update now with all the folder selections when I press update and was the backing up supposed to take that long, should I have left it?

It will take a very long time to download the update if you are on a slow connection. If you never back up your ipod it will take a very long time.

Ps the IOS software is now on 4.2 so you should update to that and not 4.1 :)
 
I have ipod touch 3rd gen ios 4.2.1 and now its availabla 4.3.1. how can i update it, because allwqays when im trying to update through itunes, it pop up that i cant
