How would you compare your interest in politics years ago to now?

I was at a recent public forum to meet and hear candidates who are running in my state primary (9/14) and took note that it was standing room only and have also noted (I tend to go to them all as I really am interested) that attendance is up so much in the last couple of years. I would often go to a meeting and be one of five people in the crowd, sadly.
Why do you think people of the USA are now taking the time to listen, learn and ask questions when years ago they were not doing this?
I have heard some of the most informed and intelligent questions lately. I've seen people taking notes and talking more amongst themselves as well. I've seen standing ovations after certain remarks with thundering applause. This is all the way down to low level politicians in my community.
Are you seeing this trend in your area? If not, I am sad. I am glad to see so many people coming out of the woodwork and taking interest.
No, writing a composition about Nixon so long ago does not answer my question.

I'm a little more involved now then few years ago... guess when you're young, you don't think too much. Now that I own a home, business, married... some of the laws/rule changes affect me much more... so I tend to pay attention.
