I almost crashed today, was this my fault or the other car's fault? How

can I prevent it in the future? I was trying to make a left turn at the intersection of two major roads, only problem is there is no protected turn and a ton of traffic. I saw a gap so I pulled straight into the intersection and waited for the gap to get to me but it closed so I waited until I saw another gap and the light turned yellow and I waited for a second because I didn't know if the cars coming were going to stop or not, then I thought they were so I gunned it the instant the light turned red and a car coming straight swerved around me and came really close to hitting me.

I don't like to wait at after the light turns red to make the turn because I got stuck in the middle of that same intersection (police cars and ambulances were coming through) until after my light turned red and the cars coming from the crossroad didn't wait at all to start coming.

Did I make any mistakes that I could avoid next time? I don't drive very much and I don't know what else I could have done.
That's funny, I guess its just how I'm used to people driving, here. Everyone pulls straight into the intersection to make a left turn, sometimes you'll have a chain of two or three cars waiting. I'm used to seeing it so I do it, too. Probably not going to, now.
