What church do I belong in? I began attending a church of Christ service when I met my husband 5 years ago (at age 17) and placed membership with him at a local congregation before we were married. I loved the emphasis on the Bible as the only lead in life--God's word. As someone who grew up in about a dozen denominations, this is how I had come to settle on the world around me anyhow. It made sense. The sermons were relevant to my day in and day out struggles with faith and the beliefs set on a rock-solid foundation... mostly.
I do not understand the emphasis on no instrumental music (though I honestly prefer the atmosphere over a superstar band or blaring organ as a matter of personal preference). And I don't see how the role of women in the church is from the Bible, since Jesus himself knew women prophets, etc. They were also prominent throughout the Old Testament.
Over the past 10 years, I have felt a growing desire to lead in the church through missions and service leadership. This desire has continued to increase during the 5 years I have been part of the church of Christ. My husband is not a public speaker. He is outgoing to an extent, but he is not the leader in our family. I am the one to stand up and speak first. So it is very hard for me to follow him. I do like the idea of wives submitting to husbands, but this isn't exactly how our family operates on a day to day basis and it's not working. I feel so uninvolved in the church, but on the other hand, I worry that my wish to stand up and shout for the Lord is really just a wish for something selfish. Is what I could say that important? Do I belong in the background? I mean this sincerely.
My husband and I have discussed this at length and (even as someone whose ties to the church of Christ go back generations) he agrees with me. Because we have moved an hour away from where we had placed membership, we are looking for another church. Any advice is appreciated. Please pray over this, regardless of your denomination. I would appreciate advice from COC members or former members and people not trying to sway me in a direction just because it's what you believe. Thanks for your help!
