...HDTV (Blu Ray quality). ? I just bought an upconverting DVD player (Phillips), and put it on my new TV and it did not look that great. I thought it would look better.
1. When using this upconverting DVD player, will it upconvert older DVDs? I tried to play the Bourne Identity, on a 1080 JVC tv and it looked good, but not great.

2. Are there settings to do to get it to upconvert (to the player or the TV)?

3. Should I just expect it to look better with newer DVDs? Would they need to be within the last 3 years or so?

Thanks

An upconverting DVD player basically turns a 480i signal to a 480p, 1080i or 1080p but not all players work great at doing this and not all content looks great when upconverted.

Basically the incoming signal the player is working with is 480i. So you can do whatever you want to a 480i signal- upconvert it to 480p or max it out to 1080p, do some "cleanup" and noise reduction or whatever but at the end of the day, you're still looking at a 480i signal.

It's like hooking up your old NES and playing Super Mario Bros. on a 1080p / 120hz. The picture is may be more clear, but that only enhances artifacts, pixelation and other problems with the original content- like playing the content under a powerful microscope.

Well first off, an upconvert player is not a HD player so it won't produce an HD picture. If you want great quality and sound you need to go with a Blu-Ray Player to use the full potential of your HDTV. I know I wouldn't waste an upconvert player on an 1080p HDTV.

I think the improvement you will notice is very minor with upconverting DVD player. They are a ripoff.

Just buy a blu ray player like the playstation 3 which will play blu rays and upconvert any DVDs.

I respectfully disagree with nkha1.

When sending a signal to a 1080P display that is not equipped with above average video processing I think that an upconverting DVD player does make a noticeable difference. I will answer your questions using your numbers.

1. All your standard DVDs are in 480i resolution with progressive scan models able to output at 480P (using component or HDMI cables). The age of the DVD is not relevant for upconversion although some DVDs feature lower quality video. (see #3)

2. Most likely yes. And usually the default is not 1080P output because they don't want the product returned when someones display coughs on the 1080P signal it does not support.

Most will only upconvert via the HDMI and you will need to set it up and pick the output resolution 720P, 1080i, or 1080P.

3. Not to my knowledge as far as compatibility with upconversion although some newer DVD's are better produced than some older ones. I have a copy of Excalibur on DVD that looks like it was copied from a VHS.
