...answers? This is NOT about "Alt Med" in general, just about HERBS.....ONLY HERBS ;-)

PLEASE NO RANTS!!!! I just want a SIMPLE answer....not FIFTEEN PARAGRAPHS that I don't even end up reading LOL

Ok,I want to know why so many of you "disagree" so to speak about the use of HERBS......
If you KNOW that "pot" does get you "high"...
If you KNOW that Narcotic pain relievers come from OPIUM...
I'm not going to keep going/list them all,you get my point....

If you KNOW these work....then WHY can't you believe that most of the other herbs work???

You see their POWER in so many of the medications that YOUR OWN BRANCH OF MEDICINE USES (speaking to the Medical Profession/but I welcome anyones thoughts).
Midnight,I can agree w/you there,no doubts:-)
What I mean...is that we have A LOT of people here (maybe not you guys lol),who knock anything that does not come from an RX/Doc :-)
Winkel...you gave a really good answer, bit long lol,but good:-) And no,I'm not a "skeptic" at all...that's my whole point...I believe in Doctors AND herbs...If you don't hang out here much then you probably wouldn't know...but some people litrally GO OFF(rants/thumbs down) when you even MENTION an "Alt" method LOL It would be like me doing that every time they gave advice about an RX...I'm open minded, there's a place for BOTH w/me:-)
Podel(sp?) Thank you for the thoughts:-)
I still say that it can't ALWAYS be "placebo effect" with herbs, but NOT with RX drugs,I mean that's always the "claim" I get...millions have said that certain herbs help them, the SAME way that millions say Meds helped them(there's your PROOF)...so why assume that ONLY the herb people are having "Placebo"....it's like only seeing what YOU want to see/believe.

most people believe they have some effect, it's just when people claim they can cure cancer is when it gets to be BS

I don't think that most people disagree with you, but people just think that herbs and natural things shouldn't be used as an alternative for going to the hospital or something like that.
I agree that it's great to use them to keep you healthy and prevent illnesses or to treat minor things, such as taking papaya pills for stomach discomfort instead of pepto or taking a B complex for energy instead of caffeine.
I completely agree that herbs work and are helpful in many ways.
Oh, and to respond to your statement in your question you posted last night: I'm 20 years old, don't live at home, and can make my own choices, therefore you wouldn't "be on the phone with my parents" and it's also not illegal to give someone advice on how to get their doctor to prescribe them percocets or to even tell someone how to do drugs. As a matter of fact, it's not even illegal to do drugs, just illegal to be in possession of them.
Suckaaaaa.

I don't deny that herbs do not have their uses but i still prefer them in concentrated and pill form. Drugs that came from herbs have been tested, found to be effective, its safety profile known (side effects, toxic levels, effective dose, drug interactions), and is more convenient to take. Also, many herbs are claimed to be effective medicines but have yet to be proven in scientific studies, so I'd rather not prescribe them to a patient who is paying me to make him well. A lot of effort and money is used when researching new drugs and you can be sure that plants are being studied for new medicines.

Until they are properly tested, refined, purified, synthesized, subjected to clinical trial, with efficacy, safety, risks, interactions and contradictions established, herbs remain dirty drugs.

Active ingredient quantities vary, many have been found to contain high levels of heavy metal contaminants, they are typically handed out by people with little or no medical training, and there is no guarantee of safety or efficacy.

There is no argument that some herbs have an effect, but the risks far out way the benefits I'm afraid.

Edit: Winkle, you say "Here in Aus, the public spends about 4x as much on alternative products as they do on prescription medications"

I'm not sure that's accurate, or representative. Don't forget in Australia we have Government subsidized prescription drugs under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) which makes most pharmaceuticals relatively cheap, and free in many cases.
