I can't fly a plane on GTA:San Andreas,For PS2. Lol?

I am the BIGGEST newb to flying a plane on gta:san andreas. I just unlocked the verdent meadows {whatever it's called} airport out in the dessert. I followed all of the instructions,At about 0:06 sec. The plane is ready for take off,I use the left analog stick and pull it back,Press R3,Then I get completely hopeless. I have to fly the plane up and down like an idiot just to keep it in the air,Lol. Even if I keep on holding the left analog stick and continuously holding down the X button,The plane is still extremely hard to accelerate,And keep up in the air. I miss the red things every time,{Whatever they're called} I crash every time I try to fly....Do you get used to it,Does it get easier? Or am I doing something right? And I also can't turn the plane in a certain direction,Nor can I turn it around,The plane heads for the ground every time. Lol...I know,"Newb,newb,newb" But I don't understand how to keep the plane up.
