I got caught using ares (kind of like limewire) HELP!?!?

Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sent my mom an e-mail through cox that they caught me sharing/downloading a song. right now-akon. they wrote the ip address and it matched my laptops address! so i think it happened because i synced all my songs from ares to my brother's cell phone. and maybe just that song had the copyright. so they said this was a warning and if i get caught again, they will suspend my mom's internet service.
im so scared! i promised myself to not sync songs anymore, unless i buy them from itunes.

but i'm wondering would they be able to catch me again if i continue to download songs from ares?(NOT Sync them but only download them?)
please help! best answer 10 points!!
 
Yes...they can catch you just downloading. Also, you may have ARES set on share, which means that even if you don't sync, folks can download from your computer. As for copyrights, ALL songs have copyrights, so just because you got caught on that one does not mean that you aren't breaking the l;aw on all your downloads (unless you buy, you are).
