example if im riding and im approaching a traffic light and im in second gear do i have to down shift to first gear while im stopped at a traffic light? or can i just hold the clutch and brake and continue riding in second gear? most city driving in my town is 35 to 40 mph =)

There is a simple bottom line you need to understand here. If you have a manual gear box, you need to treat it as one and take the necessary trouble to move up and down the gear box each time the need arises. If you not that keen or if you sadly miss your automatic transmission car, then my sincere request is to go back to driving an automatic car or a scooter with an automatic transmission.

Otherwise you will burn your clutch prematurely and also derive no pleasure from your driving experience. There is more to bike riding than just buying and posing.

Normally, when your coming to a stop, You want to downshift to the lowest appropriate gear. When your at a stop, you should always be in first. The reason why you should be in the appropriate gear is let's say your riding towards a red light at 45mph in third gear which is right for all of my bikes. You start to let off the accelerator and begin to brake. Whilst slowing down and your revs are lowering, you will then go into second. But surprise, the light turns green. You're going to want to start accelerating again smoothly. Luckily, your in the right gear. If you were still in 3rd, your revs would be too low and you would start bogging. This gives you lousy acceleration, can stall and can damage the bike if it was a more serious case.

Another example, say youre riding at 30 but your in 4th gear. Uh oh, someone's merging into you. If you pull the accelerator, you will not be able to speed up as quickly as you hope. Once again, your revs are way to low. They could be at 3k when your power starts coming in at 6000.
