I have a 88 Ford Ecoline 350. Short question is; why is the flexplate so much

cheaper than the flywheel? It's a diesel automatic. I thought it had a starter problem, but someone took it off for me and was able to tell me that the flywheel was chewed up behind it. They insisted its a very expensive part

Another mechanic told me that for this type of truck the part is actually called a flex plate. I really hope that is correct because prices were:

Flywheel: $860
Flex-plate: $54

Is there any chance I need the expensive part?
