i have a 95 gmc jimmy the ignition will not turn to the starting position...

...from the locking position ? i have tried turning the steering wheel to the left and tried to start it then i tried turning the steering wheel to the left and starting it the ignition will not unlock so i can start the vehicle i also tried to move the shifter from park to neutral to attempt to in-gage the ignition what should i do?

If you can move the shifter while the ignition is in the locked position, that's another problem. If the steering wheel is not jammed up against the steering lock pin, which it sounds like it isn't, you most likely have a worn out ignition cylinder or something jammed inside the ignition switch or column. It will have to come apart to be sure. There's too many things inside to say for sure, but the most common is a worn out cylinder. What does your key look like, worn and discolored? Tha'ts a good indication.
