I have a bad back, but I want to exercise and break a sweat. What do you suggest?

I hurt my lower back and I manage the pain well. I can easily walk or run 1 mile (max) but it's not enough to make me sweat. I want to exercise and break a sweat, but without the impact stress of running. My friend suggested swimming, but I don't know how and I dislike shared pools/chlorine. Is there an exercise that will cause me to break a sweat and not impact my back so much? Thanks!
