i have a bmw e30 and the red warning light for brakes stay on on dash board,how...

Do your brake pads need replacing?

EDIT : Doh *slaps self* sorry - just re-read question!!

Is your handbrake fully off or not functioning correctly?

There will be a wear sensor clipped on to the brake pads. You may not have reconnected this properly. If it is the abs light you may also have knocked this sensor when fitting the pads.

If it's a UK or EU E30, you should have three or four brake warning lights: The first is the handbrake warning - a 'P' in a circle with a bracket either side. If this stays on, it's most likely that your handbrake switch is faulty (mounted at the handbrake)
The second is a pad wear warning - it's a circle with a dotted curved line either side. You must renew the pad sensor when you change the pads, or this light will stay on.
The third is the brake system warning - like the handbrake warning, but with an exclamation mark rather than a letter 'P'. If this stays on, it means low brake fluid or a fault with one of the braking circuits.
The fourth is the ABS warning -as above, but with 'ABS' in the middle. This stays on when a fault on the ABS system is found, and the system is deactivated until the fault's rectified. Normal braking is unaffected.
North American models have warning lamps with writing on them rather than the industry standard symbols.
