I have a Catholic Baptism meeting with a priest tonight. What should I expect?

I'm nervous because I haven't been to church in a while and all because my husband and I want to avoid a certain person. I know the church teaches us otherwise, but this person is nasty with us and we just feel very uncomfortable around her. So please no bashing me on not attending church. I read the Bible and occasionally, although I know it's not the same, I watch/attend Mass on tv.

You don't go to Church for the nasty person-you go for yourself.


Let me tell you about an e-mail that used to go around:
Gunmen entered a church and stated something about: Anyone who won't take a bullet for Jesus-leave. Most of the people left. Once they were gone, and the few were remaining in the pews-the gunmen said something like: Now that the hypocrites are gone, carry on, Minister.

I wouldn't forward the e-mail. I would write whomever sent it.

*Those who left-are the ones who need to be there!*

Sinners! Tax Collectors! Prostitutes!


Change your way of thinking---the nasty woman NEEDS to be there.


Go-for yourself. For Holy Communion with your Lord and God.

A child is often cause for a family to rediscover their faith: rejoice that this could be your call back.

To be honest, it will depend on the priest and the parish, as well as how you come across. The priest might be concerned that you aren't taking it seriously: why didn't you speak to the priest about finding the person difficult, or seek a different Mass for Sunday, or another local parish? But he also might be unconcerned, and just happy that you want Catholicism for your child. Either way, be honest and treat this as an opportunity to come back.

Also, while it is ostensibly about the abuse scandals, I found this article helpful in my own struggles with the Church when I was finding it hard to attend my local parish where everyone knew me. Not that anyone was nasty to me. http://www.catholic.com/documents/a-crisis-of-saints
In the words of St Francis de Sales, "While those who give scandal are guilty of the spiritual equivalent of murder, those who take scandal-who allow scandals to destroy their faith-are guilty of spiritual suicide."
 
Nothing major. Usually they talk about what the Sacrament of Baptism means and where you should stand and go during the baptism.

As for the person you are trying to avoid, do not let her keep you from God. Is there a different Catholic church in your area you can attend? Or a different Mass? Pray for this woman because she obviously needs prayers and she needs your kindness and love.

I have met quite a few very nasty people, but do not let them keep you from God, from the Eucharist. THAT is what matters.
