I purchased a cable with a dvi port at one end and a vga port on the other. yet, it still doesn't work... did i just screw myself with that cable purchase?

I think you should call a technician,so you don't accidentally install the graphics card and have to start over on all system settings, but good luck to you.

That's normal. DVI connects to DVI and VGA will connect to VGA, unless you have one of those cables that has a DVI on one end and a VGA on the other.
