i'm losing a reasonable amount of coolant with no obvious external leaks. i am getting some white smoke out of the exhaust but not clouds and clouds of it i have no loss of power however it is becoming a little difficult to start in the morning (i have to give it some revs to stop it stalling) any ideas i have thought head gasket but it has had this problem now for about two weeks and it isn't getting worse
i have slight mayonaise around oil filler cap but none around dipstick i will be doing the job myself rather than takeing it to the garage as the car only cost £100 any advice on how to do it welcome obviously i will be following the haynes manual

It does sound like a head gasket leak. The white smoke is steam and burning antifreeze glycol You might also look at the dipstick for signs of sludging. I don't know this engines configuration that well but like most engines today both waterways and oilways within the engine block are close to the cylinder bores. It is likely I think that one of the coolant holes is leaking via the gasket into one of the cylinders when the engine is left overnight. This can only get worse obviously and I reckon you should take it in to have the head gasket replaced as soon as you can. It would be interesting to see, when the old gasket is inspected, where exactly the leak is. I suspect fron one of the small triangular holes between two of the cylinder bores. Ask the mechanic to show you where?
