I have been convicted of a felony but how bad will it affect my future?

I have been convicted of a felony for receiving stolen property. That was years ago and it has been reduced to a misdemeanor and is in the process of getting expunged. I am trying to be a probation officer or a counselor of some sort because I have changed my ways and I believe I can influence the life of troubled ones. I have an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Administration but I am deciding whether or not to switch to Accounting, since a government job is more likely to check deep into my background. Public Attorney's are telling me I should put Yes, I have been convicted of a felony , but it has been reduced to a misdemeanor and is in the process of getting expunged, but do I really want to do that? Any suggestions my friends?...
 
That would depend upon the job you are seeking. Some felonies would put you on the bottom of the pile for consideration of employment.

Most applications will ask for details about the conviction. Put Yes, then explain and it was reduced to a misdemeanor then expunged. Was it reduced to a misdemeanor before conviction? If so, then you were not convicted of a felony, but a misdemeanor. Were you a juvenile when this occurred? If so, I'd wait until it has been expunged. Then you can answer No to the question.
 
As stated earlier try to get it taken care of as soon as possible. If you are able to get the felony expunged than try to do so. For example most employers have the ability to find out any criminal activity that you have committed by software. If you are presentable and show humility in your job applications I know you can be hired.
 
If you ever listened to judge Mathis as he says went from one end of the law to the other. I bet if you asked him for some advise he would give it. Try it.
 
I have a felony and it is causing me nothing but trouble while trying to get a good job. I'm told I can get it reduced to a misdemeanor, but not expunged. You will do good to get it reduced or removed the best you can!
