I had some repair work done on my roof i guess they used tar which dripped all over my siding and on the concrete step....my kids stepped in it not paying attention and now its tracked all over my hardwood floors.
WD-40 and a plastic putty knife used carefully so you don't scratch the floor. Spray with the WD-40 and let it soak for a good 15 minutes and then scrape off the softened stuff. Might take several "treatments" depending on how thick the tar is on there.
And the WD-40 will leave an oily mark but that's easily cleaned up with some Dawn dish detergent, hot water and a microfiber cloth. Or use some Simple Green, it's great on grease.
with a soft tool remove all the excess tar, then with rags and a little paint thinner (not lacquer thinner) , wipe a way what is left ..the thinner will not hurt the floors...I repair roofs and after I am done I use WD-40 to clean my hands and tools and works great. If you have some, try it. . either one will not hurt your floor.
kerosene.with out a doubt.if not available.paint thinner.not laquer thinner.good luck.(give it time to soak in)then rub.soft cloth.P.S.sue the contractor).
