whom has already had 2 successful broods with some beautiful babies, those of which are now placed with 3 very good friends of mine and 1 I kept. I was told that this White/Yellow-mostly white Tiel I got was approximately 3 months old, that was a couple/few months ago, so he is about 5-6 months old now, I keep him with Lady and they get along well, they are preening each other quite a bit these days, I was told that this is a form of affection between mates, when Lady does her mating ritual/noise with the tail up, Patches (the boy) tries to get near her from behind but she keeps running off around the cage, I figured if I kept them together till she was ready and he was old enough to figure out what to do, maybe it will happen that they will eventually mate. My
question is: how old when Cockatiels begin to mate successfully, meaning both
Is the female old enough at say a year to lay eggs that are viable enough to produce healthy babies and if not at a year, at what age is it normal, say the average known age for Female Tiels to be able to have and take care of babies? And for Males at what age is the Males Sperm viable enough to produce healthy babies, and what is the average age that a Male starts reproducing? Lady is obviously old enough to have babies and has done really well raising her babies, if Patches if only 5-6 months old, is he old enough to fertilize the eggs and will the babies be healthy from a younger Father?
They both have the light colors, so I was hoping to get some lighter colored babies, I have some people who are asking for the white or yellow Tiels, I know that the Gray Gene is dominant in Tiels so I know that them both having light colors is no guarantee but I think there's a better chance of lighter babies in that case, I am of course prepared to raise and keep the babies that I hand feed, I love Tiels, the 1st brood that I hand fed, lots and lots of work, they are the sweetest little things, they never bite, but the 2nd brood I let Mom&Dad wean themselves but I interacted to keep them hand friendly, even though I did that they still have a tendancy to be a little nippier than what I would have liked, I found them all good homes with neighbors/friends, I get to see all my babies here and there, I tell them all that I will trim their wings and nails for free, so they call me for that and I get to see them...If anyone has any info for me about the ages for breeding that would be wonderful and Thank You!!!
