I installed a 3V battery into a DVD remote and it's still not working?

The battery is new and I put it in and it's still not working - anyone have any idea why? Can a remote "go bad"? It's a CyberHome remote, RMC-300Z

Remotes can die due to problems with the buttons getting soft with age, not making good contact with the board etc. Also, putting the batteries in backward on some models can damage the circuitry. Try unplugging and plugging back in the DVD player, it might be a problem on that end, not the remote. If it still doesn't work, I would point the IR from the remote into your smartphone camera ( or any digital camera or camcorder) while looking at the camera's LCD display- you should see light from the IR LEDs of the remote. IF that doesn't work, take the remote apart, wipe the circuit board off, and examine the back of the rubber buttons. Don't rub off the black conductive paint on the back of the rubber buttons, as that is what makes contact with the board when pressed. Reassemble, and if it still doesn't work, get another remote.
