...next step be? My sons were doing a terrible job at raising their two horses so I warned them and warned them I would sell one of them if they didn't shape up, get serious about training and stop abusing them. The last straw was when I found out they had tied a rope to the dog's shock collar to punish him. The worst part was when I was spying on them I noticed the horse wasn't doing anything wrong but they kept shocking him and laughing. I immediately called my friend at the petting zoo who offered me more than I paid for the horse (he owed me a favor) then I used the money to upgrade my phone to the iphone 4 (which is awesome!).

My children seemed devastated and so angry at me for selling the horse and using the money to buy an iphone. They won't talk to me and are now neglecting their other horse. How am I the bad guy here? It was my money to start out with and they deserved to be punished for being irresponsible, right?

Yes you are absolutely right in this! They can't handle raising a horse then they don't deserve it. Sell the other one. It's terrible to just watch the two horses getting abused. It's not fair to the horses.

Explain to them what they did was cruel and wrong; you warned them, so they shouldn't be surprised the horse got taken away. About the whole iPhone thing, just try not to rub it in their faces, because then they WILL have a reason to not talk to you (It's cool and all, but you gotta resist).

Sell the other horse. If they want to ride, let them work for lessons at a local lesson barn.

Abusing an animal is . not . okay. The animal abusers of today are the serial killers of tommorrow

I think you should sell the other horse. The horse did nothing wrong, ask them would they like it if you shocked them with the collar. That is NO way to treat a horse like that. I have some and they are not mean in less you do something to them. the horse is going to get meaner if they don't shape up.
