Idea of a curse for a cursed being?

I'm about to write a story on a race of beings who now inhabit the earth. These beings were once humans but humans damaged the earth and as punishment the land destroyed them all. The land allowed only those who were truly good to rise as new beings but they were cursed beings.
I need some ideas of what this curse could be?
