If a DVD player supports Divx files, does it support avi files as well?

I am looking for a portable DVD player that can play back avi files. 9' or bigger screen.
Any recommendations?
 
AVI is a "container" that supports multiple codecs, including Divx, xvid, DV, and many others.

So, the player may support AVI, but NOT all codecs associated with it.

windows movie maker is a good choice for you. but windows movie maker (media player) can accept AVI and WMV format, so you can try to convert your DVD movie into AVI. I always use this easy and free tool called Leawo Free DVD to AVI Converter. I think it must can help you.
