if i get an lg rumor touch from sprint, does it require a data plan?

i have a couppla questions. first, is it a smartphone? i think it is, but just checking. second, does it have any extra charges other then up front cost of the phone if you get a smartphone weather then a feature, messaging, etc. phone, weather that is an extra activation fee, need of a data plan, or whatever. third, do i need to have a contract with it? and if so do i have to have a bank account linked to it, or can i just go to a sprint store every month and give them the cash for the monthly cost? and finally, do you think its wierd that i am asking this questions while im in science class in school? =P thanks!
