If I use my laptop(which has WiFi) travelling, do I need virus protection?

The places I'm going to have WiFi, so can I just go ahead and set it up?
Can I download the free malware, spyware etc. or do I need to buy Norton?
I don't use the laptop for internet at home although it has WiFi, but
I'd like to take it traveling.
Does anyone know about this?
