I think its ok to meet face to face after a couple emails. Obviously he doesnt know you that well, but may be really attracted and want to meet you in person to get to know you that way.
As long as you meet them someplace public, and go home alone, you should be fine. You should make sure you do this a few times until you know the type of person they are. I met some guys after a couple emails and we just went out to dinner , ice cream, or coffee a few times so I could get to know him. Do not go to the movies though, because you really wont get a chance to see who he really is.
Also, just to be safe, when you leave separately, make sure he drives away first
