If you take a phone to verizon (not sold on verizon) can they set it as my number?

i have the blackberry torch , i got it from a friend , but i have Verizon . Can i make it my phone on Verizon ?

Yep, just go in and activate it. You won't be able to get a warrenty or insurance on it though if I remember correctly.
