and Im not sure how to charge for it? Im new to the photographer business Im having a hard time negotiating cost for services for events any takers?
Its a 2 day sporting event 20 hrs total photos for an online web magazine. They need action shots and head shots of the entire team.
 
How many photos do they want? Sizes? Color / black and white ? How good are you ? If you're new, I'd do it for cost.
 
They did not tell you what they pay? The pay was NOT discussed before you took the gig?

This is very backwards.

With the cost of DSLR's and associated lenses, I would say that $100 per hour plus expenses would be a starting point. Of course you will be charging for every print that you provide to those other than your client and what they get is a DVD of the images and onetime rights to publish them in their magazine or newspaper.

After they pull themselves off the floor, you can negociate the shooting fee, but in no case should you make less than $500 per day (ten hour shooting days are unusual) plus expenses and the same deal on selling the prints
 
average for some newbies i hear is 50 an hour
are you doing any photo editting?

Well i have a mini formula that tends to work for me!
do you have a normal job? if so what's your pay rate?
lets say you make 15 an hour. add 5 bucks to that and let that be your start out rate!

or sell each photo.
3 bucks a photo or something cheap you want to give good deals when starting out so your name spreads like hot butter on bread!

Please tell me who the client is, I want some like that.

Do you have to do any post processing work or are you just handing over the shots required?

I would charge a day rate and include web usage in the t&c's.

If you have to do post processing and produce prints etc then charge separately for them on an hourly or per print basis.

Carl_the truth - "do it for cost". Hmmm how long would the business last at that rate?? How is he going to pay his rent etc?
