Im going into Police Foundations but don't know how to prepare fitness wise.?

Hello, Im going into college for Police Foundations. I've heard this school I'm attending has a pretty hardcore fitness class. Unfortunaltly I used to be very active and sporty but since highschool I havn't done anything.

So I am so not in shape. Throughout the summer I've been doing some wieght lifting here or there but nothing exgtreme. I have a few months to get into shape for my fitness class so I need help.

I've been trying to work on my running but I can only run for less than a minutes before I can't breathe anymore, so any help on breathing techniques would be great.

I am a smoker and intend to quit very soon because of the lack of energy I have when working out.

So other than quit smoking any advice would be great on running or what kind of workouts I should do and for how long. Any help would be great.
