I'm looking to download some of the dvd's i own onto my computer hard drive

Copying a DVD in any way for any reason is illegal by default. So your question is null and void.

I'm pretty sure backing up a dvd to your computer is legal, as long as you don't intend on selling/giving the dvd away. Dvdshrink is a program i've heard of.
