...school or when the first bell rings? If a student arrives at school and leaves before the first bell rings to get to class should they be required to sign out? Or should they only be required to sign out if attendance has already been taken for the first class. This is for middle school age.
Would this be better asked in parenting or law and ethics?

Well, if their teacher has already seen them, they should at least let the teacher know that they won't be in class. But other than that, the child should be able to go with their parent or whatever.
