In Changeling, what does Gordon Northcutt put in the back of the police truck?

When the police goes to the ranch the first time to bring the kid back to Canada, he runs into Gordon and doesn't even know it. He asks for directions to the ranch and while Gordon is answering, he slips some box-like thing in the back of his truck. It never gets explained, what is it?
 
This is a great movie! But I'm pretty sure it's oil or gas maybe because in the beginning of the scene hes pouring it into the front of his car.
