In Muslim religion is it okay to beat you wife?

I do not know much about the religion that is why I ask. My sister's girlfriend's brother (a mouthful) beats his wife. Then he says it is fine because Muslim men are aloud to do this. I have never heard of this before, is this true. Is it also true that they do not let their women go outside, and they can have more than one wife because he also says this is true too. This does not sound right to me, no matter how the religion maybe look at by me it just does not seem right for the religion to allow cheating and beating of other people and an another form slavery.
