why was it called the "karate" kid if he learned Kung Fu instead? it should have been call The Kung Fu Kid lol

Who cares?

Did you not hear the controversy when it was released? This has been discussed everywhere. Over in China and I believe in the UK they used the appropriate name of "The Kung-Fu Kid", but the USA kept it to the remake of The Karate Kid..also to the Western world The Karate Kid sounds much more appealing.

Because the only reason the movie was (re)made was because of the name recognition from the first series of films from the '80s. Movie execs know that people are lazy and stupid and will see anything that they loved as a child (though the first two KK films were good).

The American title for this film was kept as "The Karate Kid", to maintain the connection to the earlier films it is loosely based on, even though this movie takes place in China and the martial arts used are forms of kung fu. The difference is referenced in the film when Dre's mother describes a team as practicing karate, and Dre quickly corrects her.
