In what ways is Shotokan karate good for self defence?

Anyone who gives you "Specifics" has no idea how to use this system as a whole. Many of the Karate systems have been bastardized and watered down so much that it is difficult to actually use them until you reach a certain level. I thought I was a pretty smart guy when I was a 1st Dan. Now I look back and think "I knew nothing back then". Keep training it will come to you in time.
Look at other arts from the same region. Most systems of Karate are so similar it isn't even funny, however a different point of view may help you understand better.

Not realy. This day learning karate is like a swimmer that never touch water. They have to many restriction in sparring and score by point. Also remember that karate is Mcdojo, means that you can get black belt in 1 year or 2 if you pay a certain fees. Lack of power training and all they focus is on style. If you want self defence then muay thai is pretty good.

It has benefited me heaps i have a good reaction time and i'm stronger and faster and much more flexible. It also teaches good methods of self defense utilizing move that are easily applicable.
