is 97,000 a lot of miles for a jeep wrangler?

I'm currently trying to figure out if it is worth it to buy this jeep. it's a 2002 Jeepr wrangler sport, five speed, six cylinder, 4 inch suspension lift, 33 inch all terrains, 97,000 miles,for just ine $9000. im nut sure if the miles are considered a lot of a jeep, or if it is still safe and worth the price. my other option is a 2003 ford explorer 2 door, with just over 62,000 miles for almost $11,000.
 
97k is considered low miles for a wrangler without a doubt. The only thing that concerns me is the 4in lift and the 33's because that means he probably did some off roading. This could mean that he beat the piss outta his jeep. Just make sure he didn't do anything too harsh and you'll be fine.

Well the 2012 cars will be out shortly. So for a 10 year old vehicle thats less than 10,000 a year, which is BELOW the average use.

The milage is not an issue at that age car. That said there are things that can go wrong with ANY 10 year old car. Have it inspected at a shop that does this all of time, and make sure the basics are OK like brakes, ball joints, steering rod-ends and frame integrity. Around here the local Franchise of MIDAS is very good (mechanics are on salary, NOT parts commissions). Who is good in your area--- use that shop.

A known issue is to look at the frame. They rust over time of course, especially if used where there is winter road salting, basically from the inside out. A particularly vulnerable spot is at the bend, just in front of the rear wheel. Now there are repairs for things like that, but it doesn't sound like you are into that route.

By the way, make sure you REALLY want a "Jeep". Be aware that it is a VERY short-wheelbase, 1/4 ton 4 wheel drive TRUCK; and as I have heard some people say "a poor substitute for a car".
 
Where are you getting these prices? The Wrangler and Explorer prices are both way too high.
 
IMO no, Engines are built on 4x4 to last forever. They only usually throw a head gasket now and then so I would get a Head Gasket tester and see if there is any leaks, If not I think the engine will be fine for the time you have it.

Of course this depends on your driving and how often you will use, and how high you rev it whilst the engine is cold.
 
First, 97k miles is just getting broken in for a Jeep 4.0L I6 engine. It will last longer than the Explorer, no question. The price seems pretty decent offhand, but where you live it may vary, because in Colorado Jeeps are everywhere, but they still hold their value very well over long-term.
 
97 k miles on a 2002 jeep wrangler is decent, but the price seems a bit too much. Is this car from a dealer?
If you want, you might want to take a look at www.craigslist.com, they have listings for SUVs around your price range. Be careful to know which listings on the site are the real deal and which is a scam.
If the price is just too good for the listing, chances are it's a scam. Good luck!
