I need a decent, reliable car. I can get a 350SDL for a grand but it needs a new engine.

Would it be a good investment? The exterior and interior is are great shape, the water pump died on the freeway and the engine fried.

I would only have 3k left after I got the car, would it be costly to replace the engine on that model? or would swapping it for a used 300SD engine with low miles cost more than 3k, or would it even be possible to use on a 350SDL's transmission?

Thank you so much for any responses.

I think it would be hellishly foolish for you to buy a car that needs a new engine...Plus that vehicle is 20yrs old. Come on...Dont forget the 1000+ dollars it will cost in labor to get the new engine installed. Its not a 2hr job.

There are plenty of vehicles out there for $4000 which I assume is your budget, that will not need new engines, water pump etc. Look on craigslist. Be smart, be humbled and buy something thats in decent shape, gets good mileage and has been taken care of. Theyre out there!
