Is Atheism a religion?

Do you consider Atheism a religion?

Also ...

If the following are true:
1. You are an atheist
2. You respond to this post
3. But you believe atheism is NOT a religion

Tell me what an atheist is doing dogmatically defending atheism in the Religious section of Yahoo Answers :-)

No, I don't consider atheism to be a religion.

''Tell me what an atheist is doing dogmatically defending atheism in the Religious section of Yahoo Answers''

Please tell me what you are doing asking silly questions about atheism in the Religious section of Yahoo Answers, then.

If u ask question about atheism at the philosophy section, we'll answer it there. Since you ask it here, we answer it here.

Just because we try our best to remove misconceptions about atheism doesn't make atheism a religion.

Defending your dislike for sports doesn't make disliking sports a sport, for example.

Yup, I got up and prayed to my atheist god, went to my atheist church, read my atheist bible, did some atheist prayers and avoided atheist afterlife for the millionth time today

Altman Be Praised, atheism is the best religion ever

Atheism clearly isn't a religion. Tell me, if you will, why you wish to label it as one, and what you think that proves exactly?

All three of those are true for me, and here's the reason. I'm not here defending atheism. I'm here sometimes attacking theism, sometimes discussing theology and philosophy, and sometimes having a joke. Very rarely to I need to defend atheism, because the attacks on it are so ragingly pathetic. Kinda like this question, you know?

Atheism if a disbelief in gods. It is a rejection of theistic claims, a description of a position, not a prescription. As such, it isn't a religion.

**"But you believe atheism is NOT a religion"

I do not believe this but know it, as a matter of definition.

**"dogmatically defending atheism"

You think defining something is "dogmatically" defending it? I have to disagree.

**":-)"

You can grin, but you're still wrong.

No, just like theism is not, its a statement of belief or disbelief in a deity/deities.

"Tell me what an atheist is doing dogmatically defending atheism in the Religious section of Yahoo Answers :-)"

They're not. Since atheism has no dogma nor any central teachings its impossible for it to be dogmatic. We're here to answer questions, to ask questions, to learn, and to amuse ourselves more then likely.

Is theism a single unified religion? Are you the same religion as a Hindu or a Zoroastrian?

Atheism can be A tenet of religions (and is, such as non-theistic Buddhism), but in and of itself only describes a lack of belief in deities.

People who believe in God(s) can belong to one or another of various religions or none. People who lack a belief in God(s) can belong to one or another of various religions or none.

Well that depends on what kind of value you see "religion" as. If it is any and all view on God and creation, then yes. It's a theory on how we all got here, which is, "....uhhhh...?".

I only answer questions directed to Atheist, so I find no validity in your argument that we dogmatically defend atheism beyond this, we are here and we don't believe and no amount of monkey motion on your part will change that.

Religion is a set of practices stemming from a belief system.

Atheism is the belief that there is an absence of God/god/gods.

The individual may indeed have a set of practices stemming from that, possibly not codified, but invariably everybody's world view will be shaped from their set of beliefs.

I don't concede that Atheism of itself is a religion, but because everyone has a religion of some sort (see the previous paragraph) then Atheists must engage in some religious practice (even if it's a lack of one, which by default is their system of practices).
