Is divx codec file safe & completely virus free to download?

hi I had been lately coming across on a few streaming sites that require a plugin called "divx codec", does anyone know if it is safe to download like contains no virus an not being harmful? I use a google chrome web browser & a windows 7 operating system.
I forgot to mention i do have a windows media player 12.
 
If it's the original DIVX Codec (from divx.com) it's virus-free, but might have unwanted bonus content (like toolbars). Be careful when getting codecs, it's easy to get some viruses while looking for codecs.


Just use VLC instead.

It's a free media player (without unwanted stuff) and has a browser plugin that can also play divx content. It's just doesn't worth messing with installing codecs anymore. VLC has it's own set of codecs. :)

You can play almost any kind of movie or audio file with it. It plays everything.
