Is Islam REALLY a peaceful religion?

I would describe myself as a pretty liberal, and tolerant person. I believe in world peace and equality for all races and ethnic groups. However, I'm beginning to have second thoughts about Islam. Muslims claim that it is a peaceful religion, but that's particularly hard to believe when you have Muslims who believe in killing in the name of "Allah", when you have Muslims who hate Europe and America, and when the stone and behead infidels, sinners, and people who have decided to leave Islam. Plus, think of all the Muslims who hate Jews. One of my friends is an ex-Muslim, and he says that Islam is just a violent, primitive and unhappy ideology that is bent on World Domination, out of fear of Allah. And I've read parts of the Koran, and it DOES say things like, "Allah shall rule the world." So basically, is this religion really peaceful, or is it indeed just an evil primitive ideology that wants to dominate the rest of the world?
 
its put to interpretation but basically its actually very peacefull
its like christianity that it preaches peace but people use it as a excuse to start wars
think how many terrorists there are its not really that many when you realise
islam is the largest world religion
 
Really no Abrahamic religion is peaceful in and of itself. They all can and have been twisted to support both peace and violence. It just depends on the people.
