Is it a sin to be gay?

Some people will use their religion to justify their homophobia. But no, being gay is not a sin. There are many religious sects that do not believe being gay is a sin, so just ignore those who tell you it is. <3

religiously speaking, in Christianity and Catholicism, yes, it is a sin to be a homosexual. God created man and women for the purpose of keeping each other company, both socially and sexually. It is therefore a mockery of God to be a homosexual.

Yes, Romans 1

26 ¶ For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

28 ¶ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

29 being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

The Bible isn't against homosexuality. Homosexuality is an orientation and it is never mentioned in the Bible. Being a homosexual does not always mean having same sex relations. There are homosexuals who accept the surface of the few times in scripture that same gender sexual acts are mentioned and just do not have sex. It does not make them less homosexual, it makes them celibate.

As for the same gender sexual relations that are mentioned in the Bible, if you study deeper than the surface... you will see that Sodom and Gomorrah were not about a sexual orientation but about sex to humiliate a foe. It says ALL the men showed up to have sex with these men and we can pretty much assume that the entire city was not homosexual in orientation but most likely either fulfilling a lustful desire or there to humiliate them into returning to their original town. (They most likely thought they were spies from another town as Sodom was a wealthy city and other towns would be looking to overtake them)

Leviticus 18 shows a list of sexual sins that are heterosexual in nature, then it has a passage about not sacrificing your children to molech, and after that were the passages about not having sex with animals or someone of the same gender. If these were indeed only sexual sins, why would they not have been mentioned before with the other sexual sins? Perhaps because the people of the time would have recognized that this was a familiar act they had seen in pagan cultures while worshiping a fertility god. It is believed that the passages in Leviticus are in reference to the worship of fertility gods and not about homosexuality as an orientation.

There is also evidence that the words used in Timothy and Corinthians were originally meant to convey displeasure at people attempting to make money off of male prostitution.

So, depending on if you believe the surface of those passages or if you believe the contextual understandings of them, same gender sexual relations may or may not be a sin according to the Bible. However, as I said before homosexuality or being gay is not against the Bible. (It is the same sex actions that are in question, not the orientation of the person... God loves homosexuals just like He loves heterosexuals.)
