Is it better to book with a travel agent or the cruise line directly?

I've book right on Carnival.com for my last 2 cruises but now I hear travel agents can get you free stateroom upgrades, free stuff onboard like wine, and even shipboard credit. I always figured travel agents just got people good rates by giving them a room in the crappiest location on the ship (because of course when you book with a travel agent you book a cruise, when you book on Carnival you select your stateroom number)

I was wondering how exactly they go about getting you all this extra stuff and good rates?. Carnival's good past guest program doesn't start until after your 11th cruise so for my next 9 cruises all I'm getting is a gold S&S card and the "past guest discount" which I bet is just like $20 off since it's still expensive.
